Getting ready for a track workout

No World Cross for me
8th March 2005
Hi everyone,

Once again sorry that is has been a while since the last update. We are still out in Albuquerque where training has been progressing well. I have had a difficult decision to make over the last week or so, in deciding whether to return early and race in the World Cross Country or stick to my preferred marathon preparation of racing when the major hard work for the marathon is already done. Then the work is in the bank and I am in the easing down/sharpening up period.

As the World Cross Country is an event that I love doing, I considered moving things around a little and coming back to Europe earlier to fit the race in. However, although training is going very well, because my break after the New York Marathon was later than usual I don't feel that I am far enough ahead to be able to ease down early and properly for the World Cross, without compromising my marathon preparation and the work that I want to be doing around that time.

My main aim for this spring has always been the Flora London Marathon and all my preparations have been geared toward that, and to be honest, it was only because the World Cross Country is as special to me as it is that I ever considered bringing my taper in early. I have decided that it would be far better to keep my focus on the main target and to finish my preparation here and then race somewhere later rather than take risks by cramming sessions in or missing things out. It also means I'll get the chance to race shorter on the road as well which I also always love doing.

It was a tough decision and I will miss being part of the GB team in France and wish everyone the best of luck there.

I was watching the results of the European Indoors with interest. Congratulations to everyone who performed so well out there, great performances from Jason, Mark, Kelly and Chris. On the distance side I was really pleased to see Helen Clitheroe and Mo Farah run well and John Mayock finish his career on a high note. I also really felt for Jo Pavey and hope that her calf heals quickly.

Finally I hope that the weather at home is improving after the cold and snow - sounds like the UK XC Trials experienced every type of weather possible in one day.

Best Wishes,
