Paula Radcliffe today won the marathon at the 2005 World Championships in a championship record of 2:20:57.

Paula led for most of the race, although her pace was an even and conservative one. She faced several challenges for the lead, mainly from Romania's Costantina Dita-Tomescu who eventually faded to finish third.
Kenya's Catherine Ndereba finished second with a time of 2:22:01 – her fastest time since finishing second to Paula in her world-record run in London, 2003.
Paula's winning time was the fastest ever clocking for a championship marathon and is also the fastest clocking for a summer marathon.
